Program Description
Millions of Americans own closely-held assets, such as a family business. For many, it is their most valuable asset. This Webinar will review the common forms of closely-held assets, the opportunities for using them to fund a charitable gift, and the important considerations to keep in mind when contemplating this type of gift.

Presenter

Jeff Lydenberg, Vice President, Consulting

Jeff is a planned giving consultant to non-profits large and small in a variety of industries. In that role he has advised planned giving programs on staffing and development of policies and procedures, trained boards and planned giving staff on planned gift design, created planned giving marketing plans, and designed marketing materials for planned giving programs.

Jeff has also played a critical role in supporting the PG Calc’s clients in their use of Planned Giving Manager and GiftWrap. He is the lead trainer on use of Planned Giving Manager gift proposal software.

Prior to entering the field of planned giving, Jeff practiced law for 6 years with the Cleveland-based law firm of Thompson, Hine and Flory in its Cincinnati office.

Jeff's planned giving career began at The Cleveland Clinic Foundation in 1995 where he was the Assistant Director of Planned Giving for five years. He also worked in a similar capacity at the Cleveland Foundation. Jeff has a BA in American Studies from Kent State University and a JD from Case Western Reserve School of Law.

Jeff is a frequent speaker at local, regional and national planned giving groups. In October 2007 he presented a session on “Recognizing Planned Gift Potential in Donors” to the National Committee on Planned Giving. He has presented to planned giving councils around the country on gift annuities, bequests programs, estate planning for gift planners, creative uses of planned gifts and a wide variety of other estate planning and gift planning topics. He is the former programming chair for the Planned Giving Group of New England. He is currently a member of the Greater Cincinnati Planned Giving Council. He is a featured speaker on PG Calc’s nationally broadcasted Webinar gift planning seminars.

John Brown, President, John Brown Limited, Inc.

John Brown is the President of John Brown Limited, Inc., a firm specializing in providing educational training and consulting services to non-profit institutions. He founded the company in 1978 in order to offer assistance to charitable organizations in the development, implementation, and marketing of major gifts and planned giving programs.

John Brown provides a unique marketing approach to planned giving. His counsel helps to build programs; train Board, staff, and volunteer members; implement capital campaigns; and structure gifts that secure the future and fulfill capital needs.

As a nationally and internationally recognized expert and educator, Mr. Brown lectures extensively throughout the United States, drawing hundreds of development officers, attorneys, accountants, administrators, trustees and donors to his seminars each year. He lectures for a number of leadership organizations including AFP, American Cancer Society, and the American Symphony Orchestra League.

Prior to founding John Brown Limited, Mr. Brown was the Associate Director of the Planned Giving program at Syracuse University in the early 70's, and went on to create and direct the Planned Giving Program at Harvard University. While at Harvard, he founded the Planned Giving Group of New England, an active organization whose membership is comprised of development professionals from the Northeast.

John Brown has more than 30 years of direct experience consulting with a diversity of clients, among which are Vassar College, the National Geographic Society, The Scripps Research Institute, The Conservation Fund, Museum of Fine Arts-Boston, and The New York Public Library.
